PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index for all items in the Northeast region increased 1.7 percent year over year in October, not seasonally adjusted, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday.

The U.S. city average CPI growth during that time was 2.1 percent.

While the Northeast CPI grew overall at a slower rate than the national CPI growth in October, several sectors saw CPI growth faster than the national average, including fuel and energy.

In the Northeast, the CPI for fuels and utilities increased 5.8 percent year over year while the U.S. city average only grew at 3.5 percent. Utility (piped) gas service in the region increased 11.4 percent year over year in October, while it only increased 4.7 percent nationally.

Energy increased 8.3 percent year over year in the Northeast while only increasing 6.9 percent on average.

Food and beverages CPI in the Northeast region increased by 1.9 percent year over year and 1.6 percent for the U.S. city average.

Medical care CPI in the region grew at 2.6 percent year over year in October, 0.8 percentage points faster than the U.S. city average.

Housing CPI in the Northeast grew slower than the national average at 1.9 percent year over year, compared to 2.9 percent nationally.

Transportation CPI in the Northeast region also increased slower than the U.S. city average, growing at 2.9 percent year over year, 0.6 percentage points lower than the national average.
