For years, David Sisson has seen clients’ interest in building accessory dwelling units dashed by restrictive state laws. When those laws were loosened last year, he decided to be proactive.
In April, Sisson, who runs David Sisson Architecture, launched a sister company Blue ADU. So far, the business has gotten dozens of inquiries from clients looking to add an accessory dwelling unit.
Blue ADU, run by Sisson and Christian Scully, offers homeowners a property analysis to determine if they can legally build such a unit. They also help homeowners design the unit and manage the project. These services can vary based on a client’s experience with construction and design and who the unit is meant for, whether an elderly family member or young adult.
“We can’t make more land, but a lot of people have unused space on their property, and simultaneously a lot of families have family members who are in need of housing,” Scully said. “It really creates a lot of freedom of housing choice for families.”
Sisson and Scully are currently focused on ADUs in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. But as the company grows, they hope to expand into other New England states and hire more staff to keep up with demand.
