More than 60 Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) employees volunteered at the Providence-based nonprofit McAuley House in June. The employees participated in the BCBSRI BlueAngel Community Outreach Volunteer program and served food, poured coffee and cleaned tables for the 300 men, women and children who visit the South Side meal site.
The employees served as part of “Lunch on Us at McAuley House” in which businesses underwrite the cost of meals served at the nonprofit agency. For the second year in a row, BCBSRI provided $10,000 to McAuley House for its June lunches.
“We are proud to have helped the McAuley House during a time when so many people are struggling to make ends meet and are in need of a nutritious meal to keep them healthy during this difficult period,” said Jim Purcell, president and CEO, BCBSRI.
“We served approximately 265 people of all ages on a single day at the McAuley House,” said Sandy Solitro, BlueAngel employee volunteer, “[and] it really made me feel like I helped make a difference in each of their lives, if only for a moment.”
Other sponsors of the “Lunch on Us” program have included: Amica Insurance Co., Citizens Bank Foundation, Bank Rhode Island, Collette Vacations and St. Mary Academy Bay View. •
