PROVIDENCE – One year after Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island conducted its first statewide survey seeking residents’ perspective on health and well-being, the insurer is launching its second RI Life Index survey.
More than 2,000 randomly chosen Rhode Islanders will be asked to participate in the telephone survey, which began July 13 and is scheduled to continue through August.

Siena College Research Institute is conducting the survey for a second year. Researchers will ask participants about issues, including affordable housing, economic mobility, access to food and food security, discrimination and access to medical care.
Last year’s survey, created through a partnership between Blue Cross and the Brown University School of Public Health, revealed that many state residents consider access to affordable housing as a significant challenge.
“That key finding [on housing] led BCBSRI to invest nearly $800,000 in this critical area,” said Kim A. Keck, Blue Cross CEO and president. “The 2020 survey will expand on topics included in 2019, with a set of questions added that focus on exploring racial discrimination and health inequities.”
