Blue Cross taps health policy expert as a VP

Shanna Marzilli has been named vice president of operations and strategic planning at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. She was previously a health policy analyst for the R.I. Department of Health. Marzilli has a B.A. in political science from Providence College.

PBN: What are you are looking forward to most in this job?

MARZILLI: To using BCBSRI’s strategic plan to guide process improvements that will help achieve operational excellence. Health care changes every day. Technology has changed the way people want to interact with us, and it’s also made information more available to consumers.

We need to continue to change the way we interact with our customers and providers to meet their needs, such as by making more information and services available via our Web site. Now, more than ever, it’s important that claims are paid quickly and accurately and that people have real-time access to information to help them make important health care decisions.

PBN: Where do you see Blue Cross headed?

MARZILLI: BCBSRI’s strategic plan reflects the vision of Jim Purcell, our CEO, and [the members of the] executive leadership team, all of whom bring a unique and important perspective regarding where BCBSRI needs to be in the future.

As Rhode Island’s only local nonprofit health insurer, our strategic plan has to balance our long-term success with the needs of our customers, providers and the Rhode Island community. My role is to engage our executive leadership team in the planning process and keep us focused on implementing the business strategies that will help us realize our long vision and mission.

PBN: How will your previous job influence you?

MARZILLI: One of the key things I learned from my position at the R.I. Department of Health was how interconnected all the players are in the health care system. Physicians, providers, hospitals and insurers all need to work with each other to finance and deliver health care.

As we move forward, BCBSRI’s strategic plan will need to take into account what role BCBSRI will play in the health care system to achieve our mission of providing our members with peace of mind and improved health by representing them in the pursuit of affordable, high-quality health coverage. •
