NEWPORT – Construction for the Breakers Welcome Center will begin at 9 a.m. on May 18, according to a press release from The Preservation Society of Newport County on Tuesday. The primary contract was awarded to Behan Bros. and the project is estimated to cost $5.4 million. It is expected to take a year to finish.

The project has caused some controversy and protest since it was introduced, and had even been litigated against but was ultimately ruled legal by the R.I. Supreme Court.

Representatives of the preservation society’s board of trustees, project architect Alan Joslin of Epstein Joslin Architects, project landscape architects Doug Reed and John Grove of Reed Hilderbrand, and contractor Michael Behan are expected to be in attendance to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
