Brian J. Lamoureux savors solving a good challenge, and in the law, he sees plenty of them.
The 39-year-old never aspired to become a lawyer. As a child, he dreamed of working in public policy or becoming an elected official. When he arrived at Syracuse University for a joint law and public administration graduate program, he envisioned law taking a backseat to his public policy work.
But Lamoureux fell in love with the complexities of the law and the allure of a courtroom challenge. With law degree in tow, he went to work in 1999 for Brown Rudnick, a major firm with offices in Providence.
A decade later, he shifted to Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC in Providence. His emphasis on solving problems, however, has never waivered.
“I’ve learned that people have business problems, not necessarily litigation problems, and the way to solve business problems is multifaceted,” he said. “I don’t litigate for the sake of litigating.”
A member of the bar in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Lamoureux has argued before plenty of judges, including at the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.
He’s found a niche in studying the evolving legal implications of social media and is a frequent volunteer presenter on the topic. He inspires the next generation by teaching a business law class at Providence College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in political science.
The son of a mailman and real estate agent grew up in Warwick and attended Bishop Hendricken High School, and now he leads the school’s alumni association/Rhode Island network. He is also president of the Brown/Fox Point Early Childhood Education Center, serving the organization for a decade. •
