Shannon E. Carter has been named marketing director of Vision III Architects. Formerly a marketing manager at Junior Achievement Rhode Island, Carter will head marketing and promotions for Vision III. She is a graduate of Rhode Island College, and a volunteer at the Greenwich Odeum Theatre.

Z. Sadie Barran has been promoted to executive vice president/president elect of Swan Point Cemetery. She will succeed Martin E. Dugan, Jr. as president, while also retaining her present title of treasurer, when he retires later this year. She joined the corporation in 1971.
HEALTH CARE
James Butterick, MD
James Butterick, MD, chief medical officer for South-coast Hospitals Group, a part of Southcoast Health System, was recently awarded the designation of Certified Physician Executive by the American College of Physician Executives. This certification was earned after Butterick demonstrated to the Certifying Commission in Medical Management that he has extensive background and experience in both clinical medicine and medical management. This was done by a tutorial, which includes attendance at lectures and oral presentations. He is one of 260 physicians nationwide who have achieved this distinction. Butterick earned a masters degree in Medical Management from Tulane University.
John Pagliarini of Warwick has been appointed director of government relations of United Healthcare of New England, Inc. His responsibilities include handling all legislative, lobbying and regulatory efforts for the health plan, as well as developing related legislative agendas and strategy. Formerly the community development coordinator for the city of Warwick, and press secretary for Mayor Lincoln Chafee, Pagliarini remains active on numerous state and community committees.

Lori Ribezzo
Lori Ribezzo was recently promoted to assistant resort manager at Long Wharf Resort for Eastern Resorts Company of Newport. For the last year Ribezzo was the concierge with responsibilities including front desk operations and reservations. Her new duties will be to assist in the daily operation of the housekeeping and front desk departments. Ribezzo previously worked at The Viking Hotel as a front desk clerk and reservationist. She is a campaign manager for the United Way and attended URI as a business major.
INVESTIGATIVE SERVICES
Christopher T. Marquet was recently appointed as senior managing director responsible for the New England Region by Kroll Associates, a unit if the Kroll-O’Gara Company. Kroll Associates provides business intelligence and investigative services to financial institutions, law firms and corporations. Marquet was previously head of worldwide business development for the Kroll-O’Gara Investigations and Intelligence Group in New York City. Before this he was managing director and head of the company’s global risk assessment division and president of Kroll Travel Security Services, Inc. Prior to becoming a managing director. Marquet served as chief of staff to Jules Kroll, chairman of the company, and associate managing director for the international division. Marquet is a 1983 graduate of Dartmouth College with a triple major in physics, economic and philosophy.

Kathleen A. Ryan
Kathleen A. Ryan has become an associate of the business law firm Partridge Snow & Hahn. A member of the firm’s corporate practice group, Ryan provides counsel on personal and estate planning matters, including business succession planning, probate, estate and trust administration, and taxation (estate, gift and income) issues. The Cumberland resident received her juris doctorate from Suffolk University Law School, where she graduated cum laude. In addition to being a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association, Ryan is treasurer of the Providence College Mal Brown Alumni Club, a member of the Board of Directors of A Wish Come True, Inc., and a member of the Cumberland Hill PTO.

Kenneth L. Gauvin was recently hired by American Insulated Wire Corp. as the national sales manager-telecommunications. Gauvin will be responsible for promoting American, obtaining new business and serving existing telecommunication customers. Gauvin’s background includes field sales management with the communications industry. Gauvin’s formal education is in criminal justice and business management.

Nelson Merced
Nelson Merced, a former Massachusetts state legislature, was named director of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp-oration’s New England District, which supports the affordable housing and community development activities of NeighborWorks organizations throughout the region. Merced will oversee the delivery of financial , technical and training support for 31 NeighborWorks network organizations throughout New England. Previously he served as commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, national director of technical assistance for Youthbuild USA, senior associate for the Community Training and Assistance Center in Boston, and as CEO of Inquilinos Boricua en Accion, a non-profit community development and human service organization.
Karen Pizzaruso
Karen Pizzaruso was named associate executive director of Development for South County Community Action Agency. She will direct special events, communications, annual, corporate and foundation giving. The Agency is located in Peace Dale with facilities in Westerly, Narragansett and North Kingstown.
RESEARCH
Devon L. Bates
Devon L. Bates of Jamestown has been named program director of The Gordon Research Conferences. She will be responsible for scheduling and evaluating conferences; proposing new conferences; marketing; and coordinating selected board and volunteer activities. Joining the staff of 14, she is also involved with the group’s financial and data management systems. Previous to this position she worked for Mystic Aquarium, the New England Steamship Foundation and the University of Rhode Island.
