Paul S. Medeiros has been elected vice president in the commercial lending division of Fall River Five Cents Savings Bank. A former vice president and marketing manager for Bank-Boston, he brings with him eleven years of commercial lending experience. Medeiros is a graduate of UMass Dartmouth, with a bachelor’s degree in management. Michael J. Cum-mings has been promoted to assistant vice president in the regional business banking department at BankBoston. He is responsible for maintaining existing business portfolios and developing new business in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Prior to his promotion, the URI graduate was a senior credit analyst. He has a master’s degree in business administration.

Amy Wilcox
Amy Wilcox of North Providence has been named assistant manager of the barcode sorting division of Mail Processing Concepts, Inc. after having been with MPC for two years as lead operator. Wilcox has taken several business courses, and is a licensed hair stylist.
HEALTH CARE
Jack R. Wands
Jack R. Wands, MD, is the new director of Lifespan’s Liver Research Center in Providence. Wands is also chief of gastroenterology at Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospital, and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. He holds 13 patents and 16 more are pending on his research on liver disease. Over the last four years, research support for Lifespan from external funding agencies has increased nearly 80 percent.
Jack Davis
Jack Davis has been named deputy director of the Red Cross of Rhode Island. He is in charge of the daily operations, including human resources and Management Information Systems. The position of deputy director had been vacant since 1993 because of financial restraints. The national American Red Cross is providing funds to the Rhode Island Chapter to support the position. Davis brings 26 years of military service and strong private sector experience to the Red Cross. He was general manager of Chaves Oil Company from 1995 to 1997 and Newport Oil company from 1988 to 1995. Having served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1988, he is a retired captain.
HOSPITALITY
Peter Hanney
Peter Hanney of Jamestown has been appointed to the newly created position of guest services manager at the Doubletree Islander Hotel in Newport. A former guest services supervisor, Hanney has been with the hotel for five years, and is now in charge of providing guests with services and activities to better their stay. He will oversee the concierge, bellhop staff, van drivers, valet parkers, and pool attendants. Prior to joining Doubletree, Hanney, a Roger Williams University graduate, worked for the public relations firm JVR Communications.

Michael J. Dee
Michael J. Dee has been named an account executive at Starkweather & Shepley, Inc. He is responsible for commercial insurance sales in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut. With 17 years of experience in the insurance industry, he was previously a principal of Aberdeen Insurance Agency in Waltham, Mass. A Bentley College graduate, Dee is an Accredited Advisor of Insurance. Starkweather & Shepley also recently named Austin P. O’Malley, Jr., of Wakefield, account manager.
Robert P. Suglia
Robert P. Suglia has been named assistant general counsel in Amica Mutual Insurance Company’s corporate executive department. A Rhode Island College and Boston University School of Law graduate, Suglia began working for the company in 1994 as counsel to the corporate executive department. The North Kingstown resident was promoted to assistant general counsel in 1996.

Kel X. Lei
Kel X. Lei has been hired as a computer systems administrator for Fielding Manufacturing. A Cranston resident, Lei will maintain and monitor computer system functions, as well as provide production reports to management. His current projects include manufacturing software integration and the Intermec-Internet system. Lei is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems.

Sheli Beck
Sheli Beck, executive director of living history at The Astors’ Beech-wood Mansion, was recently featured in the American Association of Museums’ book Case Studies in Museum, Zoo, and Aquarium Theatre. Beck’s chapter, entitled, “The Use of Improvisation in Museum Theatre” highlights the programming at Rhode Island’s only living history museum, The Astor’s Beechwood Mansion. Beck is the president of the board of directors for the International Museum Theatre Alliance.
NON-PROFIT
Keith Mathews of East Providence has been elected to the board of directors of Literacy Volunteers of America-Rhode Island, Inc. Mathews, who received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Boston College, is circulation marketing manager for the Providence Journal Company. He previously held several other positions within the circulation department of the newspaper.
Lauren Kedski
Lauren Kedski, a Warwick resident and recent graduate of Suffolk University in Boston, has been selected as the new public relations coordinator for the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. She will work with the media and the public to promote the region as a business meeting and tourism destination, and she will develop various communication strategies and materials to attract visitors to the area. Kedski has media relations experience from internships at Boston Communications Worldwide and Governor Paul Cellucci’s Press Office in Boston.
