Jacob J. Belt
Jacob J. Belt has been appointed vice president of Gregory & Cooney, Inc. of Providence. He is the former owner and operator of the Target Group. Inc., a marketing firm in Providence. Belt serves as vice chairman of the National Conference for Community and Justice and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. A graduate of St. Michael’s College, he resides in Seekonk, Mass.

Kristen E. Hopper
Kristen E. Hopper has been promoted to mortgage originator at People’s Credit Union. She will be responsible for the origination of real estate loans throughout the South County and Kent County areas. Hopper joined People’s in 1995 as senior mortgage processor. She is a member of the Rhode Island Mortgage Bankers Association and the Rhode Island Mortgage Underwriters Association. She resides in Exeter with her husband Gary and their son Nicholas.

 

EDUCATION

Arun Shukla
Arun Shukla has been appointed to a five-year term as the first Simon Ostrach Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Rhode Island. He is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University and the director of the URI Dynamic Photomechanics lab. Shukla is the author of more than 175 technical papers and three books and is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society for Experimental Mechanics. He is the technical editor of the International Journal of Experimental Mechanics and the associate editor of Optics and Lasers in Engineering. A resident of Wakefield, he was inducted into the URI Engineering Hall of Fame and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from URI in 1995.

 

 

HEALTH CARE

David R. Clark
David R. Clark, DO, has been granted medical staff privileges by Southcoast Hospitals Group, and he will be accepting patients at Southcoast Primary Care in Mattapoisett, Mass. He earned a medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a family practice residency at Pennsylvania State Geisinger Medical Center. Clark is Board Certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Cardiac Life Support and as an Emergency Medical Technician. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, American Osteopathic Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Massachusetts Osteopathic Association.

 

 

Sylvia Weber
Sylvia Weber, MA, RN, CS, has received the 10th Anniversary Advanced Practice Nurse Award, presented at a late-June ceremony in Indianapolis, Ind., by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is a clinical nurse specialist for Miriam Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry, maintains a private counseling service, Sylvia Weber Associates, and is a member of the Louis Feinstein Alzheimer’s Center Board of Directors. Weber was co-founder of the Rhode Island Samaritans Program for Suicide Prevention, and is active in the Rhode Island State Nurses Association and Leadership Rhode Island. She resides in Cranston.

 

 

HOSPITALITY

Karen J. Magnelli
Karen J. Magnelli has joined Hampton Inn & Suites in Warwick as regional director of sales. Her responsibilities include marketing and promotion in the local and regional market. She was formerly employed at the Providence Biltmore, first as corporate sales manager and then as associate director of sales. Magnelli is a graduate of Bryant College in Smithfield, with a bachelor of science in business administration.

Natalie Jackvony Zipoli
Natalie Jackvony Zipoli has joined Moses & Afonso, Ltd. in Providence as an associate. Her practice will focus primarily on commercial lending and real estate matters. She has previously served as a real estate and general law associate at Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed in Orlando, Fla. and has practiced in Boston with the corporate department of Goulston & Storrs, P.C. Zipoli is a graduate of Duke University Law School in Durham, North Carolina and earned her undergraduate degree in business from Boston College. She is a member of the Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida bar associations.

 

MANUFACTURING

Donald Shread
Donald Shread has been promoted to merchandise manager at Holson Albums in North Smithfield. He will oversee design, product development, and merchandising for mass-market photo and memory albums, as well as other photo storage products. Shread joined Holson in 1989 as director of art and design, and has served as senior creative manager since 1994. He was formerly employed as a free-lance graphic artist and as art director for ArtMold/Pierre Cardin and the art dept. magazine. He holds a bachelor’s degree form the University of Rhode Island and resides in West Warwick.

 

 

NON-PROFIT

Diane Lam
Diane Lam has been appointed to the board of directors of The Nellie Mae Foundation. She is the Providence superintendent of schools, and has served previously as superintendent of schools in San Antonio, Texas, Dubuque, Iowa and Chelsea, Massachusetts. Lam holds bachelor’s degrees from the College of St. Benedict and St. Cloud State College in Minnesota and a master’s degree from the former Boston State College.

 

STAFFING

David R. Brooks
David R. Brooks has been appointed human resources search consultant at Spherion (formerly Interim Financial Solutions) in Providence. He will work with clients to assess their needs and implement solutions. He was formerly employed at Todays Office Staffing as territory sales manager. Brooks initiated, developed and promoted the first Student Employment Program at Bryant College. He holds a master of science degree from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor’s degree from Bryant College. He is a resident of Harrisville.
