John Reis has been named client services manager at BV Security in Cranston. He has 20 years of experience in law enforcement and most recently was a crime prevention specialist in the Rhode Island attorney general’s office. In his new role, Reis visits client locations throughout southern New England to ensure quality standards at each site. He has a bachelor’s degree in justice administration from Roger Williams University.
PBN: What does your job entail?
REIS: My job entails two major areas. The first is visiting and talking to clients in order to assess performance and issues or concerns regarding our services. The second is working with school districts, law enforcement, community groups and other social service agencies in the field of youth violence; it’s causes and effects and prevention methods.

PBN: How is it different than what you did before?
REIS: This job is really not much different from law enforcement because you are still providing a service of safety. In addition to providing quality service, I believe you must possess the ability to understand a variety of needs and to problem-solve – issues that are present in law enforcement.
PBN: Is it a challenge to work in crime prevention?
REIS: It is challenging because so few resources are put into it. Our society tends to focus more on suppression, leaving the clients who need these services scrambling for funding.
PBN: Is your new position an extension of what you did before?
REIS: I think a lot of what I do is definitely an extension of my ‘past’ life but there is a challenge in private security because fairly or not, the private security field sometimes has a negative connotation attached to it.
