PROVIDENCE – R.I. Gov. Donald L. Carcieri has requested more time to put together his proposed budget for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.
In three-sentence letters to the leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Carcieri asked lawmakers to extend the Jan. 21 deadline by 11 days to Feb. 2. Although Carcieri did not offer a reason for the delay, he has made similar requests in prior years.

With tax revenue forecast to keep falling, the state faces a projected shortfall of $197 million in the fiscal 2011 budget. Lawmakers are also weighing Carcieri’s plan for closing a $220 million deficit in the budget for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.
The budget for next fiscal year would be the last one recommended by Carcieri, whose term ends in January 2011. He is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.
Separately, Carcieri’s office also announced that the governor will deliver his State of the State address next Tuesday, Jan. 26, a day earlier than initially announced.
Carcieri moved the speech in order to avoid conflicting with a basketball game between Providence College and the University of Connecticut.
But the basketball game will face competition from President Barack Obama. The White House said this week the president will deliver his first State of the Union address on Jan. 27.
