Carcieri supports Green runway expansion

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Donald L. Carcieri last week sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration supporting the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for T.F. Green Airport, a document which includes a number of airfield safety and efficiency improvements and the extension of the main runway to 8,700 feet.
The governor said the expanded runway would help the airport attract more consumer options, in turn generating more business and convention traffic for the state.
The FAA released the impact statement in July. The document formalized the administration’s support of runway expansion, a proposal which has drawn criticism from nearby residents.
The city of Warwick is preparing a formal response to the statement. •
