PROVIDENCE – Dr. Melissa M. Murphy, a colorectal surgeon, has been appointed executive chief of surgery for Care New England Health System.
Care New England made the announcement on April 30.
Murphy, on staff at Kent County Memorial Hospital since 2013, has served as the facility’s chief of surgery since July 2020, and assistant chief of surgery and medical director of surgical quality and operations from 2018 to 2020.
In her new role, Murphy will work with surgeons throughout the CNE system, support its existing programs and develop new ones.
Murphy’s track record as a surgeon led to her appointment, said Dr. James E. Fanale, Care New England CEO and president.
“Many of Dr. Murphy’s patients commend her, not only on her exceptional expertise in medicine, as well as the successful outcomes of their surgeries, but on the compassionate care she consistently delivers to her patients, from consultation to recovery, all the way through to follow-up,” Fanale said. “Dr. Murphy is the type of thoughtful surgeon who cares for patients – mind, body and soul. I am proud to say that this is the type of care that our patients have come to expect from Care New England physicians.”
Murphy’s accomplishments thus far at Kent include leading an infection prevention project that decreased surgical site infections and developing advanced surgical training and medical education programs. She was also instrumental in creating an enhanced recovery-after-surgery program.
