Career program points students toward medicine

Hasbro Children’s Hospital hosted its annual “White Coat Ceremony,” a graduation celebration for students in its young doctors club, a partnership between Rhode Island Hospital’s internal medicine department and Roger Williams Middle School.
During the celebrations, students heard words of encouragement from doctors, hospital leaders and community officials, including comments from Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts. The students also received white doctors’ coats and recited the Hippocratic Oath as a symbol of their dedication to professions in medicine.
“We are thrilled to see a great turnout of support each year for the young students in our ‘School-to-Career’ programs,” said Alexis Devine, youth development coordinator for Lifespan. “This collaboration among teachers, students, parents and doctors has paved the way for many Rhode Island youths into successful health care careers.”
Science teachers at the school and physicians in the medical and pediatric residency programs at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital serve as the program’s educators. •
