PROVIDENCE – Noris Castillo, a caregiver with the PACE Organization of Rhode Island, was named Rhode Island Family Caregiver of the Year on Nov. 8 by the Family Caregiver Alliance of Rhode Island, in partnership with the state’s Division of Elderly Affairs.

Castillo received the honor during the Rhode Island Family Caregiver of the Year award ceremony at the R.I. State House.

PACE social worker Kristen Auger read the nomination letter to the audience, including many members of the Castillo family. Michelle Szylin, director of the R.I. Department of Human Services’ Division of Elderly Affairs, Rep. James R. Langevin, D-R.I., and a representative from the office of Lt. Gov. Daniel J. McKee also gave remarks.

“Noris takes care of her mother with dedication, strength and grace. At every turn, and every decision, Noris does not make the easy decisions for herself. She makes the right decisions for her mother’s mental and physical well-being – even if that means her life will be more challenged as a result,” Auger said.

“Our organization is dedicated to providing both care for the older adults of Rhode Island and much-needed support to their caregivers,” said Joan Kwiatkowski, CEO of PACE Organization of Rhode Island. “Our care plans involve a strong partnership with our participants and their caregivers. Noris has gone above and beyond for her mother and entire family. She deserves this honor greatly.”
