Central Falls receiver fires City Council

CENTRAL FALLS – The receiver appointed by the state to run the bankrupt Central Falls fired the city’s elected City Council Tuesday and replaced it with a three-member appointed body.
Receiver Mark Pfeiffer said the Receiver’s Council would perform the functions of the City Council, including licensing, permitting, zoning and related matters.
“I was hopeful the City Council would recognize that it was in the best interest of the residents of Central Falls to work together,” Pfeiffer said in a news release. “It is unfortunate that several members of the City Council have chosen to continually obstruct our efforts to return fiscal stability to the city.”
Pfeiffer, a former judge, previously took over the mayor’s responsibilities from Charles D. Moreau. But his actions have drawn ire from the City Council, which has complained he is overstepping his authority.
The Receiver’s Council will include current City Council member James Diossa, former City Council member Robert Ferri and former Central Falls Finance Director Edna Poulin.

  1. I find this amazing. Is Central Falls, RI still part of the USA? Are its citizens still entitled to fair representation in their own local government? Did the City going bankrupt/into receivership somehow also deprive them of this right? One must wonder….What would happen if RI needed a federal bailout? (Not such a far-fetched idea.)

  2. Yes, Anita. Central Falls, RI is still part of the USA. And yes It is also a bankrupt entity that is currently living off of the public teet, as you know. So, since current leadership drove the city into the crapper, they were summarily fired from their positions for incompentecy…as it should be. When Central Falls, RI can pay its own way, they can have a seat at the leadership table again. When the electorate of Cental Falls can chose representation that keeps its fingers out of my pocket, we’ll talk again. Until then, there is no need for conversation with them. I may be a screaming liberal democrat, but I still believe in competent goverance of which Central Falls apparently has none.
