SWANSEA – The Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts’ BankFive Foundation, in late October, donated $5,000 to Swansea-based Community Autism Resources Inc.

CAR will use the money to purchase necessary equipment for use in its Gottschall Access Program – a three-year initiative in which students enroll in specially designed courses, held on a college campus. The programming aims to develop life, vocational and social skills for individuals with autism. Participants often progress in the program and later gain internship experience, which often leads to employment.

In a statement, Barbara Domingue, CAR executive director, said the organization is “grateful” for BankFive’s “support.”

She went on to say in the statement: “Their generous gift will have a significant impact on helping our students achieve their goal of obtaining a meaningful postsecondary educational experience.”

The donation will provide for the purchase of iPads, sensory equipment for the classroom, general school supplies, and farming and gardening supplies.

“The services provided by CAR are extremely important to those who have autism spectrum disorder,” said William R. Eccles Jr., president and CEO of BankFive, in prepared remarks. “We know the funds we provide to their Gottschall Access Program are going to be put to good use in preparing students for the future.”

CAR offers comprehensive, holistic, evidence-based support to individuals with autism to help them “reach their fullest potential,” according to the release. Services are also available to individuals’ families and community members.
