PROVIDENCE – Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC10 recently honored four nonprofit organizations – Church Community Housing Corporation in Newport, Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island in Providence, Youth in Action in Providence and the Molar Express in Cranston – for being the 2008 Champions in Action.
“Citizens Bank is proud to call each of these four agencies a Champion in Action,” Joseph J. MarcAurele, president of Citizens Bank Rhode Island said at a reception breakfast. “From providing affordable housing to teaching job training skills, developing youth leaders and making children’s smiles bright, each of these agencies is truly a champion in its respective field.”
As part of the award, each organization received a $25,000 grant and promotional and volunteer support from Citizens and NBC10 employees.
The Champions in Action program is a joint initiative of Citizens Bank and NBC10 launched five years ago to recognize and support nonprofit organizations for their contributions to Rhode Island communities. A new Champion in Action is selected each quarter among a range of social service topics.
According to Citizens, Church Community Housing Corporation was recognized for helping people avoid foreclosure through the revolving loan program that has assisted more than 1,550 households, and for working with local nonprofits and mental health centers to develop more than 170 units of special-needs housing.
Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island in Providence was recognized in the category of work force development for its innovative Assistive Technology program, for providing deaf and hearing impaired services, adult ESL classes and job-coaching services, and for providing more than 280 internships and job-placement opportunities annually.
Youth In Action of Providence was recognized in the youth programming category for its academic mentoring, and community outreach, multi-cultural community events and community build projects.
Molar Express of Cranston was recognized in the community health care category for its high-quality, state-of-the-art, comprehensive dental services provided with no out-of-pocket expense to families, and for providing 2,000 under-served children with more than 3,000 dental visits in 2008.
