Elaine Dickson grew up wanting to be a journalist. But when her family immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica just before she started college, fear won out over pursuing her dream. She studied accounting, then business administration, and embarked on a career in banking.
Over time, financial strategy grew from a practical way to support herself into a passion in its own right. Now, the Cumberland resident seeks to share that passion with others through Mavenly Consultants LLC, a strategy, financial services and bookkeeping firm that began in July.
Dickson has wasted no time building her company to a four-person team, with clients from across the country representing a range of for-profit industries and nonprofit causes. She also registered with the state Minority Business Enterprise program as a Black and woman-owned business, opening up new opportunities for government contracts.
While starting a business in a pandemic might seem risky, Dickson cited the increasing attention on shrewd strategy and the wider geographic net afforded by remote work as advantages.
