College Choice says Brown’s IT masters program one of best

PROVIDENCE – Brown University has one of the best masters programs in information technology in the country, according to College Choice.

College Choice, which released its ranking of the best IT masters programs last month, said Brown was 28th on the list, noting that it offers a master of science program through its Department of Computer Science suitable for those wanting to improve their professional competence in computer science and for those preparing for further graduate study.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the 35-school list for its program.

College Choice cited the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which said careers in computer and information technology occupations are expected to grow in the double-digit percentages in the next decade.

“That’s the result of the growth of cloud computing, “big data,” and the spread of mobile computing. Median pay can start in the six figures, but there’s a trick to it: you’ll need a master’s degree or higher,” College Choice said.

The website said it based its results on cost to attend, the reputation of each school in the field and its return on investment, as well as results from a survey of college freshmen published by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California. Data from other publicly available sources, including U.S. News & World Report, the National Center for Education Statistics, and PayScale.com also was used, according to College Choice.
