PROVIDENCE – Construction employment in the Providence metropolitan area increased 100 workers year over year in March, a 0.5% increase, to 21,900 workers, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Wednesday.
The percentage increase ranked No. 215 of 358 metro areas in the United States.

The AGCA said construction employment increased in 218, or 61%, out of 358 metro areas between March 2018 and March 2019, declined in 83 (23%) and was unchanged in 57 (16%) metro areas.
New Bedford metro construction employment remained unchanged year over year in March at 2,300 jobs, ranking No. 219 in the U.S.
Construction employment in the Taunton-Middleborough-Norton, Mass., metro area declined 3%, or 100 jobs, year over year to 3,100 workers in March. The percentage increase ranked No. 300 in the nation.
Meanwhile in the Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area, construction employment increased 300 jobs, or 8%, to 3,900. The percentage increase ranked No. 37 in the nation.
“Fewer metros than in recent months recorded construction-employment gains over the past year,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “However, the ongoing increase in spending on most categories of construction suggests that the lack of job growth is more likely due to a scarcity of qualified workers rather than a slowing of demand. In fact, there was a record number of job openings in construction going into March.”
