Nancy Contillo has been named manager of human resources and corporate staffing at Johnston-based FM Global, the state’s largest private employer. In her role, Contillo oversees a team of human resource professionals responsible for developing and implementing corporate-wide human resource initiatives and leading the commercial property insurer’s staff recruiting efforts.

PBN: What has been some of your greatest accomplishments at FM Global thus far?
NANCY CONTILLO: Despite a competitive hiring environment, we’ve made great strides this year in hiring professionals to meet our growing needs in information technology and services, finance and loss prevention engineering. We’ve also really expanded our partnerships with universities to offer rewarding internships and co-op programs and then transition some of those participants to full time positions within the company.

PBN: How do you balance FM Global’s international and local operations on corporate-wide HR-related initiatives?
CONTILLO: FM Global has more than 50 offices worldwide with 4,700 employees serving clients in more than 120 countries, so all our employees globally are offered our “Total Rewards” program which is comprised of four parts – competitive compensation and incentives, benefits, learning and development and work/life balance. Then, each of these four components is localized to comply with local laws, customs and business practices outside of the U.S.

PBN: Can you address the issue of diversity recruitment efforts and how it might apply to large companies and small companies alike?
CONTILLO: In a world of globalization and cross-border business interdependencies, diversity in the work force is more important than ever. FM Global continually strives to create a good balance of diversity within our company as it relates to such areas as age, gender, race and ethnicity. The top three leaders within our company, for example, are Indian, Canadian and Dutch.
We also work with other global companies to share best practices, and continue to increase our participation in diversity-focused associations such as the Society of Women Engineers.
Many of our employees also have the opportunity to work in other countries, which broadens their experience and cultural sensitivities. Additionally, FM Global’s internship program is another way we embrace diversity. For example, last year, students represented Canada, China, the Dominican Republic, Iran, Mexico and the U.S. In fact, just recently, FM Global was recognized by The Boston Club for including three women on its board of 12 directors (READ MORE). •
