WEST WARWICK – The current Internet address system, called IPv4, is running out of space, and Cox Communications wants to be prepared.
In anticipation of 2012, when Internet users will have to switch over to IPv6, a new address system, Cox Business and a number of its customers tested the IPv6 system during its first worldwide test on June 8, World IPv6 Day.
The test, organized by The Internet Society, was to ensure that service providers will be able to run IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously during the years-long transition period.
IPv4 has 4.2 billion available internet addresses while IPv6 offers around 340 undecillion.
According to The Internet Society, IPv6 provides about 4 billion times more addresses than IPv4.
Other companies that participated in the World IPv6 Day were: Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, and YouTube.
