WOONSOCKET – Patients who fill their prescriptions at a CVS/pharmacy or receive treatment at a MinuteClinic soon will be able to access and manage their health information online through Google Health, CVS Caremark announced last week.
Launched last Monday, Google Health is a high-profile new option in the growing field of online personal health records. It allows users to securely store, organize and manage their medical records and health care information, including their medication and treatment histories.
CVS’ part in this involves making Google Health records available to patients who use its services, starting with MinuteClinic sites in Tennessee and, within weeks, in 25 other states (there are no MinuteClinic facilities in Rhode Island at this time). The clinics’ record systems will be integrated with Google Health, CVS said, so patients will be able to securely import their visit summaries into their Google Health accounts.
“Within the next several months,” CVS said, the service will be extended to consumers who fill their prescriptions at a CVS/pharmacy or have prescription coverage from CVS Caremark.
“In today’s health care environment, information related to an individual’s overall health is often fragmented, creating gaps in the availability of data and missed opportunities to coordinate care,” said Helena Foulkes, senior vice president of health services at CVS Caremark, in a news release.
“At CVS Caremark,” she added, “given our presence across the health care continuum as a retail pharmacy, pharmacy benefits manager and retail clinic provider, we can help bring together key health information of importance to our consumers and provide them with a holistic view of their health status.”
