CVS creates new EVP, chief medical officer post

WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp. (NYSE: CVS) announced last week that it has hired Dr. Troyen A. Brennan, most recently chief medical officer for Aetna Inc., to fill the newly created role of executive vice president, chief medical officer.
Brennan will be responsible for the company’s MinuteClinics, Accordant Health Care, clinical and medical affairs and health care strategy.
“Troy Brennan is a highly regarded national health care expert who not only understands the challenges of health care today, but has hands-on experience with all aspects of the health care delivery system,” President and CEO Thomas Ryan said in a news release.
“As a former practicing physician, hospital administrator with background in quality care measurement, and leader of a top health care insurer,” Ryan added, “Troy’s experience will help strengthen our company’s integrated approach to improving access, affordability and quality of care. He is a great addition to our management team.”
At Aetna, the nation’s third-largest health insurer, Brennan was responsible for clinical operations, national quality management, disease management and other programs. Prior to Aetna, he was president and CEO of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization in Boston; he had previously served as the hospital’s director of quality measurement and improvement. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
In the news release, Brennan said he is excited to join CVS, noting that it “has integrated retail pharmacy, pharmacy management services and health care clinics to reach more than four million consumers every day.”

Brennan has his medical degree and a master of public health degree from Yale Medical School, a J.D. from Yale Law School and a master’s degree from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Southern Methodist University in Texas. He has served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School, Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
