WOONSOCKET – The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust Inc. said it awarded $6.3 million in grants last year to nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island and more than two dozen other states.

CVS employees visited a number of nonprofits, including the YMCA in Woonsocket, last Thursday on a special “Day of Giving” to surprise them with new grants.

“We hope these much-needed grants will enable these organizations to start the New Year off with renewed energy,” Eileen Howard Dunn, vice president of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, said in a statement. “The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust is proud to partner with them to make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities and their families and to promote health and wellness to those who need it most.”

In addition to the Woonsocket YMCA, six other Rhode Island organizations received grants from the CVS Trust last year: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence; Children’s Friend and Service; Day One; In-Sight for the Blind; March of Dimes Foundation; and the Woonsocket Head Start Child Development Association Inc.

CVS created the nonprofit organization in 2001 and since then says it has handed out $37 million to more than 1,800 organizations. The grant recipients are primarily organizations that provide health care to the uninsured, care for children with disabilities or support college students with scholarships.

The trust’s assets totaled $74.2 million at the end of 2007, the most recent year for which figures are available, according to its tax filings.
