PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management has been awarded a $300,000 federal grant to assess contaminated properties under the state’s Brownfields Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.
The funds come from the EPA’s Brownfields Assessment Grant program and will be used for work throughout the state with a focus on Central Falls, Pawtucket and Woonsocket. The grant will support efforts to inventory, prioritize and conduct environmental assessments on properties, the EPA said. Funds will also be used to develop cleanup plans and community outreach.

“DEM is committed to environmental justice areas and creating healthy communities in our urban core, and we will use this grant to build upon our efforts to redevelop brownfields in Woonsocket, Central Falls and Pawtucket,” said DEM Director Janet Coit in a statement. “Rhode Island’s success with brownfields would not be possible without strong partnerships across federal, state, and local government; business; and communities.”
Target properties include Sylvian Street in Central Falls, the Conant Thread/Coats and Clarks Mill complex in Pawtucket and three mill buildings located at 55 Main Street in Woonsocket.
