DEM seminar will explore brownfields liability

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management will hold a free seminar Thursday to explore issues related to the liability of redeveloping and reusing polluted industrial sites.

The seminar, held in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at DEM headquarters, 235 Promenade St.

The goal of the meeting is to dispel common myths about brownfield liability and to present objective information about how organizations or municipalities can start their own brownfield redevelopment projects, according to a news release.

A presentation on brownfields, including the state’s voluntary cleanup process, funding sources and federal liabilities, will be included. DEM in October announced $2.6 million in grant awards to 12 projects.
