NORTH SCITUATE – In an effort to minimize the environmental impact of future growth and development near the Scituate Reservoir, the R.I. Department of Environmental Management will meet next week with the five bordering towns to present a “greenspace strategy” report.
Since 2006, representatives of the DEM and its consulting firm, Ashfield, Mass.-based Dodson Associates, have been working with the communities to establish inventories of natural, cultural and recreational resources, according to DEM.
On Thursday, officials and residents of the five towns – Foster, Glocester, Scituate, Johnston and Cranston – are invited to learn the results of those inventories and discuss possible strategies for future development in the region.
“The towns can more effectively protect their community character if they have reached a consensus on what is important to protect and where the priorities are located,” Scott Millar, chief of the DEM’s Sustainable Watersheds Office, said in a Monday statement.
The regional planning initiative offers the communities an “opportunity to plan for growth, so development can be managed to minimize impacts to the environment and quality of life,” Millar added.
The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve’s coastal training program will be partnering with the DEM to present the greenspace report, the agency said. The meeting will be held Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m.,
at Chopmist Hill Inn, 1315 Chopmist Hill Road, North Scituate.
