DOH praises FDA e-cigarette decision

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Food and Drug announced this month that it will begin regulating electronic cigarettes and related products – a move that could impact Providence-based retailer Cigotine LLC.
The move – applauded in a statement by R.I. Department of Health Director David R. Gifford – was made because of “unsubstantiated” health claims and deceptive marketing, the administration.
“Recent research suggests that electronic cigarettes contain carcinogens and other toxic chemicals,” Gifford said.
Cigotine owner Steve Bayonne told Providence Business News in July that his electronic cigarettes contain none of the dangerous chemicals that cigarettes do. The company has a kiosk in Providence Place mall. •
