BRISTOL – Gabriela Domenzain has been named the next director of the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University according to a Thursday statement made by the school.
In prepared remarks, Domenzain said she was “thrilled” to join the LPI team at RWU and “help Rhode Islanders appreciate not only the challenges Latinos face but their vast contributions to Rhode Island’s economy and cultural richness.”

She added: “When we talk about the Latino population, it’s too often in a context of the anxiety some feel over our changing demographics.”
Domenzain, who will assume the position on August 15, was previously deputy campaign manager for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s presidential campaign in 2015 and 2016. During that time she served as O’Malley’s chief spokesperson on immigration policy and Latino issues.
In addition, she worked with the Obama for America 2012 campaign as principal spokesperson on immigration and the Latino vote.
She graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in public policy and received a master’s degree in journalism from New York University.
RWU President Donald J. Farish welcomed Domenzain, lauded her “first-rate education” and called her “an outstanding leader” for the LPI.
Domenzain replaces Anna Cano Morales who left the position in January to become the associate vice president for community, equity and diversity at Rhode Island College.

The Latino Policy Institute, housed in the School of Continuing Studies on RWU’s Providence campus, is committed to generating and communicating data to stimulate public policy discourse and enhance the public’s understanding of the Rhode Island Latino experience. With this information, Latinos’ social, economic and civic contributions to the state can be better documented, understood and engaged.
