DOR issues $247.7M in tax refunds to date

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Revenue announced that the personal income tax season is over and that the Division of Taxation has issued $247.7 million in refunds year to -date, an increase of 14 percent from this time last year.

The average tax refund for filings this season was $574, a five-year high in the state, according to Neena Savage, tax administrator for Rhode Island.

“Many hard-working taxpayers count on their annual Rhode Island personal income tax refund for any number of reasons. The Division of Taxation is making sure that the money is there when they need it,” Robert S. Hull, director of the DOR said.

The agency has thus far processed 615,666 tax returns, a 9 percent increase from tax returns processed by this time a year ago as well as a five-year high.

The report also said that to date, the DOR is on track to prevent $1.9 million in tax fraud this year, the result of a 23 percent increase in refund fraud detected year over year.

While the tax season is over, the DOR said it will be processing refunds for corrected returns, and other extenuating tax circumstances, as well as preparing for filings for the October extension deadline.
