PITTSBURGH – The off-site construction of the new Iway bridge and the use of barges to bring the span up Narragansett Bay has brought the R.I. Department of Transportation national recognition.
The DOT received a regional award this week from a regional alliance of transportation officials, and was nominated for a national award.

The 400-foot bridge – part of the Interstate 195 relocation project – was built at Quonset Point, in North Kingstown. In 2006, the bridge was floated up the bay on two barges from its construction site to its final location outside the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier.
The technique won first place in its category – “Innovative Management” – at The Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials’ 2008 NASTO Annual Conference. The project will now compete as a finalist for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ nationwide America’s Transportation Award.
DOT Director Michael P. Lewis said he was proud of the department.
“The innovative approach in building the bridge off-site and floating it to Providence was the safest, most efficient means of constructing it,” Lewis said. “It was a great feat of engineering.”
