PROVIDENCE – Local public relations firm Duffy & Shanley Inc. received a nod last week from PR Week magazine for its campaign for a furniture supply company in Illinois.
The campaign earned Duffy & Shanley an honorable mention in the trade publication’s community relations category, making it the only Rhode Island shop honored in the national competition, which gave out 33 prizes.

Duffy & Shanley developed a campaign centered on the renovation of J.V. Martin Junior High School in Dillon, S.C., last May. President Barack Obama had pointed to a student at the school during his first presidential address to Congress, and subsequent media coverage noted the poor physical condition of the school and its furniture.
That led Duffy & Shanley to suggest that Sagus International Inc. renovate the school, Vice President of Public Relations Annette Maggiacomo told Providence Business News earlier this year. Sagus donated $250,000 worth of furniture to completely transform the school.
The renovation garnered coverage in Time and People magazines, on the ABC program “20/20,” and on cable news networks CNN and MSNBC. An Associated Press article on Sagus’ donation was published in nearly every major U.S. metropolitan newspaper, according to Duffy & Shanley.
“If there was a media outlet, we were in it,” Maggiacomo said.
Duffy & Shanley President Jon Duffy told PBN the Sagus campaign was an example of how an idea can elevate a public relations and marketing company like his into the national marketplace. In a news release, Duffy hailed his staff for its work.
“This recognition speaks highly of the leadership in our public relations team, and the dedication and energy we put behind each of our clients,” Duffy said. “We’re incredibly proud of our team, and the opportunity to support such a great cause on behalf of Sagus International.”
Maggiacomo and Senior Account Executive Meaghan Wims led the campaign, with support from Account Coordinator Emily Hollenbeck.
