Dunkin’ Donuts sees strong franchise development growth in first half of 2010

CANTON, Mass. – Dunkin’ Donuts opened 338 new locations worldwide, 78 in the U.S., and signed 72 development commitments in the first half of the year, the company reported in a statement Wednesday.

“We are very pleased with the growth Dunkin’ Donuts experienced in the first half of 2010. The strength of our brand continues to enable us to be one of the fastest growing brands in the fast-food industry,” said Nigel Travis, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands.

From Jan. to June, the company signed store development agreements in 14 U.S. markets, including Chicago, Atlanta and Miami.

Franchise expansion in the Northeast, however, is slower due to already high market saturation, a company spokesperson said. In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, 11 new restaurants opened in the first six months.

The company highlighted its strategy on flexible franchisees’ designs – such as free-standing stores, kiosks and gas stations – in order to keep the brand “fresh and competitive.”

Dunkin’ Donuts did not release first-half financial results. In 2009, the company recorded revenue of $5.7 billion and did not disclose earnings.
