Eccles assumes command of NUWC

NEWPORT – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center has a new leader, Rear Adm. Thomas J. Eccles, who assumed command in a ceremony Friday at NUWC headquarters in Newport.

Besides overseeing the testing, evaluation and R&D activities of NUWC’s two major divisions, in Newport and Keyport, Wash., Eccles will continue to serve as deputy commander for undersea warfare and technology at Naval Sea Systems Command. In that role, he is responsible for the safety, maintenance and readiness of the nation’s attack and missile submarine fleets.

A native of Wallingford, Conn., Eccles has four degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in management and in electrical, mechanical and naval engineering.

He also has extensive experience in project management and command, and holds Navy qualifications in submarines, as a deep sea diver and as a salvage officer. He has received several medals and honors including the Legion of Merit.
