PROVIDENCE – General Dynamics Corp.’s massive $22.2 billion Virginia-class submarine contract is expected to bring an additional 1,500 jobs to Rhode Island by 2025, Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said on Friday.

The company was awarded the contract in early December. It is the largest shipbuilding contract in the U.S. Navy’s history.

The company’s Electric Boat subsidiary, operating in North Kingstown’s Quonset Business Park, already employs roughly 4,000 workers in the state. EB employs roughly 17,000 workers nationwide.

The contract is for nine Block V Virginia-class submarines, with the option for a 10th. The additional submarine would raise the value of the contract to $24 billion. All Block IV Virginia-class submarines are under various stages of construction.

“That is good news for the state and the result of many years of hard work,” said Reed, who visited Electric Boat Friday to celebrate the contract. “It is also good news for small manufacturers and local suppliers and vendors that do business with Electric Boat. I will continue working to ensure we have a good pipeline of well-qualified workers to fill these jobs and get the work done in a timely and efficient manner, to open the door for a tenth submarine, which I believe the Navy needs.”

Construction on Block V is scheduled to begin this year with delivery scheduled for 2025 through 2029.
