Peter Bancroft | WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care CEO and president
As a senior leader for WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care for the past 27 years, I have learned the importance of surrounding oneself with competent, loyal people, the importance of listening and the importance of honesty and integrity.
But perhaps the most significant lesson I have learned is to embrace change, take risks and don’t let fear of failure keep you from moving forward.
Since its earliest beginnings, WellOne has undertaken some bold initiatives to meet the escalating demand for primary medical, dental and behavioral health services in the communities we serve. Each initiative, whether the project involved a merger, new partnership, construction, a renovation, an expansion, a new program or adding more staff, carried with it an element of uncertainty and a big dose of risk-taking.
In all cases, however, the risks were based on facts, backed by research and planning, hard data, community input, board approval, and buy-ins from community-based organizations and other health care entities.
Stepping away from your comfort zone can be intimidating and the fear of failure daunting. However, not having the courage to meet uncertainty in the face may be the biggest failure of all.
