Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC 10 recently named Farm Fresh Rhode Island a Champion in Action in the food and nutrition category, presenting the nonprofit with a $25,000 unrestricted grant, media coverage and promotional and volunteer support.
Lisa Churchville, president and general manager of WJAR, said, “NBC 10 is proud to recognize Farm Fresh Rhode Island for its collaboration with local farmers to distribute fresh produce, dairy and meat to local schools, grocers, hospitals and restaurants statewide.”
Farm Fresh Rhode Island manages eight urban farmers markets, a kitchen training program for at-risk youth and provides the Bonus Bucks program, in which SNAP recipients receive extra dollars to spend on fresh foods at farmers markets.
“Accessibility to fresh and nutritious food improves the health and quality of life for communities in our state,” said Ned Handy, president of Citizens Bank Rhode Island. “This award will help Farm Fresh Rhode Island continue to provide healthy choices to all Rhode Islanders, including those limited by both cost and proximity to food.” •
