PROVIDENCE – Revolution Wind has reached a historic milestone with the successful installation of the project’s first offshore wind turbine, Orsted A/S announced on Tuesday. “This is a monumental moment for Revolution Wind, the Northeast region and Rhode Island," said Gov. Daniel J. McKee. "The installation of the first turbine speaks to the strong private and public partnership driving the project forward. Rhode Island is excited to build upon this progress and lead in clean energy and the offshore wind economy for decades to come." Revolution Wind is a 704-megawatt farm located about 17 miles off the Rhode Island coast that will provide renewable energy to Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The project, initially slated for completion in 2025, has been delayed to 2026 due to construction obstacles, which Orsted said will also increase expenses. Revolution Wind will utilize 65 Siemens Gamesa turbines that will help generate 400 megawatts of clean, affordable offshore wind power for Rhode Island and 304 megawatts of the same for Connecticut, enough to power more than 350,000 homes, Orsted says. “Seeing the first turbine rise above the water at Revolution Wind is another unforgettable moment for this new American energy industry we’re building together,” said David Hardy, Group executive vice president and CEO Americas at Orsted. “Revolution Wind is bringing local union jobs and economic development to Rhode Island and Connecticut, and it will deliver clean offshore wind power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the region.” Orsted on Aug. 29 announced that it’s moving its U.S. co-headquarters from its office on Exchange Terrace to a larger, 17,470-square-foot location at 500 Exchange St. – which also houses the headquarters for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island – and it will open a new U.S. engineering, procurement and construction hub. The company said the new location, where it expects to open its new headquarters this winter, will be about 50% larger than the existing offices. And it expects to more than double the number of employees it has in the state in the coming years. Currently, Orsted employs nearly 100 Rhode Island-based employees, including at its regional operations and maintenance facility in Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown. In March, Orsted also proposed Starboard Wind, a 1,184-megawatt development off Block Island that would serve Rhode Island and Connecticut. Other nearby Orsted projects include the South Fork and Sunrise Wind projects.
