BOSTON – Electronics manufacturing services provider Flextronics Americas LLC, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Flextronics International, will lay off 21 workers in Rhode Island and 254 in Massachusetts.
In Massachusetts, the company plans to lay off 254 at 20 locations by Aug. 31, according to the Boston Business Journal, which noted that the workers service Verizon Wireless equipment and are employed at Verizon retail stores.

In Rhode Island, the lay offs will be staggered at locations in North Kingstown, Providence, Smithfield and Warwick. The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the R.I. Department of Labor on May 25.
“Verizon Wireless notified us of their decision to move the capability provided by our business in house. Verizon Wireless did note that this is not a reflection on our performance, but rather a change in their business model,” said Flextronics spokeswoman Renee Brotherton to the BBJ.
“This has caused Flextronics to make the difficult decision to initiate a reduction in force. Affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for other positions within Flextronics as well as potential employment opportunities with Verizon Wireless,” she said.
Flextronics International’s client roster includes Microsoft, Dell, Cisco, and Hewlett-Packard; in the first quarter, the company’s profit grew to $135 million from $60 million a year earlier.
What Verizon Wireless is doing is unfair to the Flextronics techs. VZW should gives every qualified tech the opportunity to be rehired at the same (or better) pay and benefits. I just filed a lawsuit on behalf of a former Flextronics employee alleging it cheated him out of overtime for his work as a Field Team Supervisor in a Verizon Wireless store. I think it was a widespread practice.
