JOHNSTON – The corporate office park of FM Global, the property insurance company headquartered in Johnston, has been designated a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the environmental education organization Audubon International. The distinction makes the 93-acre property the first in Rhode Island to be so recognized, and one of only 32 such properties worldwide.

“FM Global is the most environmentally conscious office park I’ve been to in Southern New England,” said Tim Faulkner, president of the board of directors of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust and who was involved in assessing the site for certification.

FM Global received specific praise for high performance in five “environmental priority areas,” including environmental planning, water quality and conservation, wildlife habitat management, resource management and outreach and education.

The expansive property includes 77 acres of wildlife habitat comprising 55 acres of woodlands and 20 acres of wetlands. On campus, there are also four acres of fields and wildflower meadows in addition to two ponds and a stream.

The corporate offices themselves, which span 8 acres, are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certified for resource efficiency and 100 percent of FM employees partake in recycling and waste reduction programs on campus, resulting in 84 tons of recycled materials annually.

FM Global had previously been recognized by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island in 2015 when it was named as the group’s “Business of the Year” in recognition of the company’s “leadership in applying environmentally sound and innovative practices to its day-to-day business operations.”

“FM Global has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program,” said Tara Donadio, Audubon International’s director of cooperative sanctuary programs. “By taking action to implement indoor and outdoor conservation projects, the management and staff at FM Global have demonstrated their commitment to the sustainable management of their natural resources.”
