The Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation Inc. recently donated $50,000 for epilepsy research through CURE (Citizens United for Research of Epilepsy), a nonprofit that since 1998 has raised more than $7 million for research and other initiatives.
The money was raised at the 2007 Siravo Foundation Snow Angel Ball fundraiser, held Jan. 29 at the Crowne Plaza at the Crossings in Warwick and attended by more than 400 guests.
“We wanted to fund something major for epilepsy research,” said Richard Siravo, executive director of the Siravo Foundation and Matthew Siravo’s father. “We knew CURE would be the appropriate organization, and that 100 percent of the donation would go to this research.”
The Siravo Foundation is named in honor of five-year-old Matthew Siravo, of South Kingstown, who died on Mother’s Day 2003 due to complications from a prolonged seizure. The foundation provides aid for epilepsy research and education, epilepsy awareness through educational programs and scholarships to high school seniors with epilepsy.
