NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Rhode Island treasurer has named Richard Garland of North Kingstown High School the state’s top financial-literacy educator.

General Treasurer Seth Magaziner this month surprised the North Kingstown teacher by visiting his classroom and naming him Financial Literacy Educator of the Year.

“Mr. Garland has brought his own experience in business to the classroom and regularly goes above and beyond to prepare students for personal and professional financial success,” Magaziner said in a statement.

Garland is the second educator to receive the accolade. He started teaching five years ago, leaving the private sector to enter a career in education. He advises the school’s business club, and helps students complete the JumpStart RI Financial Challenge, focused on financial literacy.

“Mr. Garland takes a personal interest in his students, sending lengthy emails to individual families on how to best assist their children and how he can partner with them,” said Principal Denis Mancieri in a statement. “This is why everyone succeeds in his classes.”

The award is designed to recognize teachers who “excel in and out of the classroom to provide their students with the financial-literacy skills they need to successfully navigate our complex financial system.”
