PROVIDENCE – Gas prices fell in Rhode Island and Massachusetts for the third consecutive week but remained higher than the national average Monday, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.
A gallon of self-serve regular gas averaged $3.75 in Rhode Island in the Aug. 19 survey, down one cent from last week and five cents from last month. The Massachusetts average dropped two cents to $3.64, seven cents lower than last month.

Both states had higher prices than the national average of $3.54 per gallon.
Last year at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was six cents higher at $3.81.
The Massachusetts average price dropped nine cents over the year from $3.73 at this time in 2012.
