Geeks founder Templin honored by JWU

PROVIDENCE – Local tech guru Jack Templin has been honored as a distinguished visiting professor by Johnson & Wales University’s School of Technology.

Templin accepted the honor last Thursday and delivered a guest lecture to the school’s faculty, students and staff on innovation and entrepreneurship among college students and recent graduates.

“I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot the past couple of years, and have become convinced that these very young entrepreneurs and innovators could and should play a key role in the transformation of Rhode Island’s economy,” Templin explained in a blog post.

At the event, Michael Khaouam, a Cranston native who is a sophomore network engineering major at JWU, received a scholarship in Templin’s name.

Templin is best known as co-founder of the regional networking group Providence Geeks and as program manager of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation’s RI Nexus, a portal for the state’s information technology and digital media community. He also owns ThoughtCap LLC, a consultancy based in the city.

He says that those studying technology today are at a distinct advantage today given the many opportunities for jobs, as well as entrepreneurship. It is a message Templin has brought to students at a number of area schools in recent months as part of an RI Nexus college tour.

Templin is the second person recognized as a distinguished visiting professor by the School of Technology. Last year, JWU honored Gianfranco Zaccai, president and CEO of Continuum, a Boston-based design consulting firm. (READ MORE)
