PROVIDENCE – Cash collections in Rhode Island totaled $343.9 million in January, a 9.7 percent increase year over year, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Monday.

  • Personal income tax collections totaled $161.2 million in January, a 12.5 percent increase.
  • Collection of sales and use taxes increased 3.1 percent year over year to $94.1 million in January.
  • Departmental receipts totaled $30.8 million in January, compared with $29.9 million one year prior, including $9.4 million in fines and penalties.
  • Lottery transfer declined $328,071 year over year to $28.2 million.
  • Collection on the cigarette tax totaled $12.8 million in January, a 12.3 percent year over year.

Fiscal 2018 year-to-date collections in January totaled $2.2 billion, a 7.6 percent increase from January fiscal 2017. Year-to-date personal income tax collections have been $837.5 million, an 8.4 percent increase year over year. Sales and use tax collections increased 4.1 percent year to date to $633.4 million in January.

Lottery transfer collections fiscal year to date were $180 million, largely due to the $128.8 million collected from the Twin River video lottery terminals. Overall fiscal year-to-date lottery transfer increased 0.8 percent year over year.

Tax amnesty collections collected fiscal year to date in January totaled $9.1 million. General revenue tax collected under the program totaled $6.1 million, while interest collected on overdue taxes totaled $3 million.
