Gotham Greens to debut greenhouse

PROVIDENCE – Gotham Greens has announced its debut. The fast-growing urban-agriculture company will unveil its completed $12.5 million urban greenhouse on Dec. 5.

Gotham Greens places urban, sustainable greenhouses on rooftops and brownfield sites in former industrial areas. Providence is its first location in New England. The company, which was founded in New York City in 2009, has since expanded its greenhouses to locations including Chicago and Baltimore. A greenhouse in Denver is now under construction.

Its products, including a variety of leafy greens, are sold in supermarkets and to restaurants and institutional customers.

In Providence, the 110,000-square-foot greenhouse is located at 555 Harris Ave., the former General Electric Co. Providence Base Works factory.
