Grants to help STEM students

PROVIDENCE – Six $1,000 grants were awarded to Rhode Island and Massachusetts organizations working to engage girls in the science, technology, education and mathematics fields.
Recipients were selected by the Southern New England Girls Collaborative Project, a newly established affiliate of the National Girls Collaborative, based on their idea and level of collaboration with other similar organizations.
The Rhode Island recipients and their projects are:

  • Tech Collective, STEM Expo for Middle School Girls – Pilot program modeled after the GRRL Tech event to participate in STEM related, hands-on activities.
  • New England Institute of Technology, Taking Flight with Science and Math – A program consisting of study, role models and activity-based event to exposed 20 to 25 underserved middle school girls to scientific and math-based endeavors.
  • Sophia Academy, Women of a Certain Age – students explore the technical aspects of camera videography and computer programming by creating a documentary of interviews with female Sophia Academy founders.
    The awards are expected to reach 250 to 300 female middle and high school students in 2012.
